Heavy Metals and Your Health
Heavy metal poisoning refers to excessive exposure to a heavy metal which affects the normal function of the body. Examples of heavy metals that can cause toxicity include: lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium, and chromium. Heavy metals are found naturally in the environment, certain foods, medicines, and even in water. They are part of all amalgam (silver) fillings, which contain up to 50% mercury.
Toxic heavy metals are heavy metals that become poisonous to the body when they are not metabolized or excreted and so accumulate in organs and tissues. They enter the human body through food, water, air, or absorption through the skin.
The main mechanism of heavy metal toxicity include the generation of free radicals to cause oxidative stress, damage of biological molecules such as enzymes, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids, damage of DNA which is key to carcinogenesis as well as neurotoxicity. Even at a very low level, heavy metal ions can cause serious health effects. Heavy metals disrupt metabolic functions in two ways: They accumulate and thereby disrupt function in vital organs and glands such as the heart, brain, kidneys, bone, liver, etc. They displace the vital nutritional minerals from their original place, thereby hindering their biological function.
What are the symptoms of heavy metal poisoning?
- Itchy skin
- Psoriasis type lesions
- Headaches/migraines
- Neurologic damage (tremors, seizures, and Parkinson’s type symptoms)
- Visual changes
- Memory loss
- Tinnitus
- Hearing loss
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
- Abdominal pain
- Vomiting
- Shortness of breath
- Tingling in your hands and feet
- Chills
- Weakness.
- Cancer
- Swelling of legs and ankles
- Dark urine
- Pale stool color
- Chronic fatigue
- Speech problems
- Muscle weakness
Prenatal and neonatal lead and cadmium exposure have been documented to cause common and widespread neurological and psychological effects including depression, anxiety, mood disorders, schizophrenia, etc.
The liver is often one of the first organs that accumulates heavy metals. When your liver is stressed out many other body functions suffer since the liver cannot detoxify the body any longer.
More and more people are becoming aware of metal toxicity and the first concern that most of us have is: What foods am I possibly eating that may cause me to ingest heavy metals?
Since this contamination has so many different sources, there is a wide range of foods contaminated by heavy metals that you should be aware of:
- Cereals
- Rice
- Wheat
- Edible roots (carrots, potatoes, or any vegetable that grows close to the ground)
- Mushrooms
- Fish (tuna and mackerel)
- Crustaceans
- Mollusks
- Almonds
One of the fastest ways to determine if you may be suffering with metal toxicity is to look closely at your eyes and see if there are unusual pigmentation areas. Consult with your ophthalmologist!
Lead and cadmium accumulate in human ocular tissues, particularly in the retinal pigment epithelium and choroid.
Your tongue and gums can also show signs of toxicity. A blue, black tongue or gums can often indicate metal problems!
What are your options for diagnosing a metal toxicity issue?
Can blood tests help? For the most part, blood tests can only analyze metals that are flowing in your blood, such as iron. Metals accumulate and bind themselves to organs and tissues and therefore are NOT detected by standard blood tests. It is the biggest problem that we see with current testing. You go to your medical provider who orders a metal screening blood test that comes back negative. Of course the blood test is negative. The metals are already fixated in your tissues and not being picked up by the blood test.
Hair tests are another popular screening tool, however hair is already exposed to so many chemicals and environmental factors that it may be impossible to have accuracy. Sometimes positive tests can be misleading and often what’s in your organs is NOT being expressed into your hair.
Urine provocation testing is the optimal way to diagnose metal toxicity. If you need more information please contact our office.
If you are concerned about the possibility that your health issues could be related to metal toxicity do NOT base conclusions on blood or hair tests. Maybe you have had numerous inconclusive tests and are still considering that metal toxicity may be affecting your health. Metal toxicity is the reason why lead paint is no longer used. It is the reason why all dental offices are mandated to install amalgam separators to prevent mercury from entering the environment. It is also the reason that thermometers are no longer made with mercury. It is a problem that affects a lot of us and needs to be properly diagnosed.
So how can Biological Dentistry help?
We will examine your current dental condition including the status of any fillings, crowns, root canals, or implants. Should we find warning signs then we will provide some diagnostic and treatment options for you.
Since many of our patients have metal fillings, implants, and crowns we will evaluate the condition of your dental work and determine whether these restorations may be causing harm to your body.
Removing dental work that contains metal is NOT warranted unless the restoration is failing due to decay or breakdown. Removing dental work in hopes of eliminating metal toxicity is NOT advised!
What if your dental work is failing and needs to be replaced due to decay or breakdown? Please keep in mind that older amalgam/silver fillings contain up to 50% mercury and removal causes aerosols full of mercury. Our staff is fully trained on preventing aerosols in the office (especially since Covid guidelines were implemented) and we take these procedures very seriously for our own health.
If you need to remove amalgam fillings, please consider that there are precautions that need to be taken to protect YOU during this procedure. At our office we care about your safety and therefore the following safety protocol is followed.
We will:
- Prophylactically dispense Chlorella and Activated Zinc before procedure begins
- Use UV and HEPA extraoral filtration suction units
- Use full protective gowns to cover your entire body including mask for your nose, hair gowns, and protective eye wear
- Use DryShield evacuation and/or Rubber Dam isolation for entire procedure along with high speed adjunctive suction
- Use copious water during drilling
- Dispense of all protective gear in Hazardous Waste containers
We are an IAOMT SMART Certified Office!
If you need more information about Metal Toxicity and your health please contact us and we will be glad to discuss our examination protocols with you and what other Biological Dentistry options are available.
What can you do on your own to help detoxify your body of any potential metals?
The human body is capable of healing so long as it can eliminate! Your health is a direct correlation to how well you eliminate and removing metals and toxins is always at the top of the list. Removing metals from your body can be done by eating or drinking:
- cilantro.
- garlic.
- wild blueberries.
- lemon water.
- spirulina.
- chlorella.
- barley grass juice powder.
- Atlantic dulse.
Always wash your vegetables and fruit
Advanced treatments for removing metals are done using herbal detox products or chelators.
Other treatments can include IV chelation which can only be done by a Medical Doctor who specializes in such options.
