Jaw Function Correction
STATE OF THE ART DENTISTRY
Why Choose Jaw Function Correction
A majority of the dental work that we provide for our patients is done to correct abnormalities in jaw function in order to alleviate symptoms of jaw pain, facial pain, headaches, and ear pain. We provide neuromuscular treatment approaches for all of our cases utilizing K7 technology and advanced modern dentistry to restore smiles, confidence, and function.
JAW FUNCTION CORRECTION
The majority of the patients that we treat have some underlying bite problems. Your bite is simply the position of your jaws when your teeth touch together. Unfortunately, many of us are not born with a perfect relationship between our teeth, muscles, and joints. Add bad habits, such as clenching and chewing hard foods, and your bite can become damaged or misaligned.
Most dentistry is based on the assumption that wherever you bite your teeth together is natural and correct. Most dental treatments are planned from this existing or habitual occlusion (bite.) This position may seem reasonable but often it is out of alignment. Adjustments are often made to what appears as a normal bite only to make things worse.
Neuromuscular dentistry (ND) addresses the relationship between your normal bite, muscular activity, and your jaw joints (TMJ.) ND considers the entire system that controls the positioning of your jaws, teeth, and joints (craniomandibular complex.) Many of our referring dentists consult with us regularly about these complex problems.
Providing harmony to the jaws and teeth is often necessary for patients who suffer with migraines, headaches, jaw pain, facial pain, ear pain, tinnitus, vertigo, and neck pain.
Understanding Bite Basics:
Most of us think of our bite in terms of what the teeth are doing. This is only a small part of the apparatus of chewing. There is a whole system that controls positioning of the jaws. There are muscles in the neck that open the jaws and there are muscles that help you chew that extend all the way up to the ears and forehead. The chewing muscles are some of the strongest muscles in your body. Normally they are supposed to brace your lower jaw in a neutral and open position where there is no stress. Unfortunately, imbalances cause these muscles to become hyperactive thereby causing pain symptoms. In pain patients, these muscles are being used thousands of times per day. Swallowing alone is done hundreds of times a day. Chewing hard foods, clenching, and grinding will overuse these muscles 10,000 or more times in one day alone. Furthermore, if your teeth do not fit together properly it will cause more abnormal muscle activity leading to more pain and dysfunction. This can also lead to breakdown of the cartilage in the jaw joints, adding more fuel to the fire.
ND is the best approach to helping patients who require reconstruction of their bite. There are many approaches behind these treatments, including biofeedback and therapy modalities that rebalance the craniomandibular complex. Determining the optimal position for your jaws, teeth, muscles, and joints is a complex science that very few dentists will treat. That is a reason that our office accepts referrals from other dentists and we are happy to work together with your provider to find the perfect solution for your problem.
