Head Pain Problems & Sleep Apnea

The TMJ is located at the intersection of 3 major meridians of your body.  These meridians control the stomach, endocrine system, and small intestine.  After 30 years of treating tens of thousands of TMJ patients we have seen the health miracles that have happened as a result of successful therapy.

What you must understand about your jaws and the – CMD – craniomandibular complex (teeth, jaws, sinuses, nasal passages, throat, eyes, neck, and brain) is that all of the components are closely related to each other in terms of function.  When one is under stress so are the others.  The TMJ can affect the function of all structures of your head, including the brain, sinuses, eyes, throat, and neck.  The problem is usually skeletal and biomechanical.  An imbalance of these components can cause nutritional, neurological, endocrinological, and stress problems in your body.

What happens if you don’t sleep well?
What are the eventual health concerns?

Most Common ones are heart attacks, irritability, high blood pressure, sexual dysfunction, and headaches.

Untreated sleep apnea can take 10 years off your life! Compare this to Diabetes and Smoking, which shorten life span 5-7 years.

Sleep apnea patients spend a significant amount of time at night in a ‘fight or flight’ state with elevated blood pressure, heart rate and respiration. They do not feel rested in the morning because they spent the night fighting to breath.

Sleep apnea patients are twelve times more likely to be involved in an automobile accident. Tired driving is the #1 cause of car accidents and is statistically more dangerous than drunk driving.

Part of the CMD complex is your NASAL airway.  Nasal breathing is critical to your health.  Your sinuses produce Nitric Oxide, an essential element used by your body to control metabolism and detoxification.  People that don’t breathe properly through their nose will have health issues.  A deviated septum can cause a severe decrease in nasal breathing.  Surgery to correct this problem is not always successful.  Using Nasal Cones or Breathe Right Nasal Strips can make a huge improvement in nasal breathing.  Purchasing inexpensive nasal cones, such as Pause, can improve your health more than any other medication that you may have received from your doctor. Likewise, a large tongue or obstructive tonsils/adenoids can impair your breathing.

A sleep apnea diagnosis is usually needed to determine what your options of treatment may be.  Some of these options include dental mouthpieces that help to open your airway and allow you to breather properly.  Other simple options can include an Aveo tongue retaining device that you can purchase on Amazon or other similar websites.  Visit:  www.migraineheadachepain.com  for complete education on this topic.

A score of 9 or above indicates you may be having a problem with daytime sleepiness but below 9 does not necessarily mean that you don’t have a problem. However, this is an indication that you should see us for your first evaluation appointment. A proper examination and testing is always required.
